When Tillage Begins
“When tillage begins, other arts follow. The farmers, therefore, are the founders of human civilization.” Senator Daniel Webster (1840)
This summer is one of the most beautiful I think I've ever seen. There has been plenty of rain, plenty of heat - it's making for plenty in the fields. Small side-note, there's been a ton of storms mixed into this pattern... so we are so fortunate that (so far) the crops close by are still standing, and growing strong! This Sunday I took the opportunity to wander around my parent's farm yard with my camera, on a mission to collect reference material for a series I am dreaming up (whenever I get time for that -- insert long sigh!!)
It was such a treat - enjoying the great outdoors in the land of the living skies - the natural beauty of the diverse prairie display... I could go on and on... (insert another long sigh, the good kind)
I'd just like to slip in one more time - I love Saskatchewan. I love my home, I love where I come from... I feel truly, abundantly blessed.
Within weeks the local bustle will begin, harvest is around the corner. The farm operation equals a lot of inspiration; surely a lot of 'other arts follow'!!
'Tillage' is the preparation of land for growing crops - it is land under cultivation. I'm reminded that life is constantly a tillage ground, yes, we will reap what we sow. I need to be certain of what seed I am scattering along my path.
There's a lyric that says:
Words are like water, sprinkled with love.
You will harvest all your heart's been dreaming of...
I hope you get a chance to experience some SE Sask beauty this summer - (ya get your canola field selfie!) but mostly, have some alone time out in God's spectacular creation to do a priority-check; reflect on what you are DOING, not just what you are intending... before it all gives way to the next season. Thanks for taking the time to read my little brag on farm-life - and don't forget to sow mercy.
